“Heartbeat of the tournament”: Volunteer spirit lights up Katara Amphitheatre

ZURICH, Switzerland, 22 March 2022 / – FIFA Voluntary Application Process (FIFA.comThe Qatar World Cup 2022™ officially opened yesterday, with 20,000 venues set aside to attract people from all over the world to play a key role in the tournament.

The launch of the volunteering program was marked by a remarkable event at Katara Amphitheater in Doha, where 3,500 potential applicants were welcomed by distinguished guests, including Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Her Excellency Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, Minister of Sports and Youth, and Her Excellency Hassan. Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.

Attendees also heard from FIFA legend and Qatar Legacy Ambassador Tim Cahill, businessman and philanthropist, Ghanem Al Muftah, and sports journalist Mohammed Saadoun Al Kuwari.

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Volunteer Program – the largest volunteer program in Qatar’s history – aims to bring people together through football to deliver the first ever FIFA World Cup™ in the Middle East and the Arab world, celebrate love for the game and show the true spirit of Qatar. It will put 20,000 passionate volunteers at the center of the tournament’s operations and create a proud volunteering legacy in the region.

How it works

Starting on the morning of March 21, volunteers of all backgrounds and any experience level can apply for the tournament via Volunteer.FIFA.com. Applications are open to everyone, from residents of Qatar to people across the Middle East and beyond. Speaking English is a requirement, while knowledge of Arabic is an asset.

The Volunteer Program specifically looks for reliable solutions to problems with interpersonal skills and the ability to learn quickly. Communication, leadership, language and teamwork skills will be beneficial. In return, participants will be provided with opportunities, skills and tools to support the tournament.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will be held from November 21 to December 18, but some roles will start from October 1. Volunteers from Qatar and around the world will be at the heart of tournament operations, providing support across 45 functional areas in formal and informal locations, such as stadiums, training sites, the airport, fan zones, hotels and public transportation hubs.

Requirements and selection process

All volunteers must be:

  • 18 years of age or over on October 1, 2022. There is no upper age limit.
  • Ability to speak English – Arabic or additional languages ​​is an advantage.
  • Able to commit a minimum of ten full days during the tournament.

The shortlisted candidates will participate in the assessment and interview. All selected volunteers will receive training, a limited-edition adidas outfit along with a meal during their shift, and free use of public transportation.
