Roma Held Goalless By Bologna as Mourinho Explains Lineup Changes –

Roma are out of the picture for a top-four Serie A result after a struggling Bologna side pulled off a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico. With the Europa Conference League rematch against Leicester City waiting in the wings, Jose Mourinho shuffled the deck against the midfield opponent.

Mourinho’s decision to change the skin of a Roma side that led Leicester to a 1-1 first leg in England in the midweek Conference League backfired Giallorossi. The absence of several established first-team stars meant the home side struggled to create many clear chances against a defensively rock-solid Bologna.

Chances were scarce before half time. Mourinho introduced standout striker Tammy Abraham as part of the quartet of substitutes who were hired on the hour but to no avail. The ex-Chelsea shooter immediately connected with Lorenzo Pellegrini, who hit wide.

Bologna defender Lorenzo De Silvestri almost got all three points for the visitors towards the end of the game, but Rui Patricio made it big to thwart his header. A stunning draw against Rossoblu ended Roma’s run of 17 wins against sides languishing outside the top four in Serie A.

Despite failing to score for the first time in 30 games against Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico, Mourinho has managed to rest some of his key first-team wheels ahead of the forthcoming Conference League clash with Leicester.

With an even semi-final draw after the aforementioned stalemate in the East Midlands, Roma will have to fight for it all at home on Thursday. Every silverware is important to the ‘special’ who will try to guide his Leicester counterpart Brendan Rodgers to a coveted appearance in the inaugural Conference League campaign.

Mourinho explained why he had to make so many changes against Bologna, relating it to Leicester’s upcoming visit to Rome.

We have Thursday’s game in mind, but at the same time we have to do well in Serie A because it’s a big difference between fifth and eighth in Serie A.‘ the Roma boss told DAZN, as relayed by TUTTOmercato WEB.

I had to rest some players because they were just too tired. I wanted to show my belief in all the boys we are a united group tonight along with the fans.”
